iprotectyou: An animated gif of Baze smiling (smile)
[personal profile] iprotectyou posting in [community profile] milliways_bar
The first time Baze attempted a serious whittling project, he went at it recklessly.

It only took five minutes before the knife blade slipped from the wood and opened a gash in his thumb. He stubbornly continued carving, but ended up getting blood all over the balsa wood. Another ten minutes passed before the blade skipped off a knot and sliced his index finger. More blood. More carving. At that point, the wood was slippery, so he had to stop.

He applied bandages to his fingers and waited a day before trying again. But try again he did, and learned how to properly protect himself with a Bar-provided thumb pad for his blade hand.

And he learned more than that. He learned that cuts made with the grain will peel away smoothly; cuts made against the grain will give resistance and eventually split. He learned the pull stroke, the push stroke, and straight-away rough cutting. He learned to whittle slowly, to use the strokes as a meditative practice.

Though his carved fish and eggs and demon bunnies are still crude, he thinks he can whittle in his sleep.

Today he's leaning against the bar, holding a block of balsa wood in his left hand and his pocket knife in his right, with the blade facing towards him. He braces the thumb of his right hand against the wood, and squeezes his fingers in order to draw the blade towards his thumb. His strokes are short and controlled.

He's getting wood shavings everywhere. Someone might want to tell him to clean up.

Alana's seated at the bar today, wearing a red Diane von Furstenberg wrap dress with black polkadots and a pair of black, high-heeled boots. She's got her bare legs crossed at the knee and her chin cupped in her hand.

She was reading Conquering Mountains: A Guide to Solo Female Travel, but now she's just people watching.

She might be watching you.

One thing I mean to do with playing Ben again is get rid of the old habit I had of trying to type out his accent. Reading newer issues, Marvel doesn't bother with it any more, so I don't see why I should. Especially since I was always worried it was awkward to read.

I'd like to offer my own apologies for disappearing the past couple of weeks. I think Danny and Selina are the ones I've left things hanging and I hope you're good with me tagging in and continuing. If not, that's fine and thank for what we've got done. = )

After all the hype and worries, MARVEL vs. Capcom is back with MARVEL vs. Capcom: Infinite! Has anyone here had a chance to play the game yet? If so, what do you think of said game so far?

Groo - Friends and Foes #1 (2015)

"Each month of this yearlong series, Groo and his faithful pooch, Rufferto, encounter a different acquaintance--or enemy--with the usual dire consequences! In #1, Groo crosses paths with Captain Ahax, the seaman with the world record for most ships sunk by the all-time stupidest character in comics! Brought to you by the award-winning team of Sergio Aragonés and Mark Evanier!"

The plot revolves around a little girl, Kayli, who is looking for her father - a member of the Groo cast (fortunately for her, it's not him). She stumbles upon Groo and they travel along while he wreaks havoc unintentionally.

I'm going to let Touji go. Chance as well. I thought both would be fun, but Chance's isn't being that loud and I already have spunky teens that are louder (Ahsoka, Selina, and Sabine), and with Touji, I'm just not having the urge to play him as well as having the problem of truly groking his culture and magic system. It seems easy on the surface, but something just isn't clicking.

I do mean to bring Ben Grimm back to Milliways...finally. News of the possible beginning of the return of the F4 to the comics landscape has woken him something fierce. I plan on starting with his time in the Guardians of the Galaxy and slowly moving forward until December when the search for Reed, Sue, and the kids starts. Very likely to stick with allusions to things happening in his life rather than doing OOMs. I just don't seem to have the time for them.

I think I need to through Tybalt (Toby Daye) and Yang (RWBY) into a sandbox to give them some play before I decide if I want to play them. I keep being tempted by both since they have new canon out or soon to be out.

Ehren and Elayne are still there. I'm waffling on Elarne. I love the world, but I'm not sure I understand it well enough. Ehren I am still having trouble deciding on a PB as well as a canon point to began play from.

I'm learning more and more that character and personality are more important to me for playing in Milliways than a cool world or powers.

OK, work and then maybe some playing or writing. I still need to get back to my Trucker Quest.

Today is Stephen King's 70th birthday. To celebrate I figured I would post a few pages from Marvel's adaptation of The Stand showcasing Randall Flagg, who I think is one of King's greatest villains.

I'm a man of wealth and taste. )

Ellen has been busy. Very busy. Post-apocalyptic Philadelphia is not the worst of cities- so far as she knows that distinction goes to Pittsburgh- but it's... well, it's still a post-apocalyptic city run by ice gangs and weirdoes and it's got mutant hippos in the rivers and there is a persistent legend that people don't try to cross the river because plants on the other side will eat them. And in her experience you can't deny that possibility. So she's been busy.

But the door opened to the Bar today, and she is grateful for any chance to be somewhere that does not smell like the shores of the Schuykill, and she will apologize to you if the attempts she has made at cleaning up and changing into her old blue Vault suit with the 101 across the back have not been enough to get the reek entirely gone. Just let her have her beer in the process, okay?

My apologies for dropping off the face of the Bar for a while there. I've been busy RL- not a great excuse, I know- and I've been making jewelry as a hobby/small business lately. Which doesn't sound like it'd interfere, but man, have you tried typing with a pair of roundnose pliers in one hand and four 18-gauge dead soft wires in the other? It is not an easy experience.

... anyway. I'm sorry to have vanished for a while, and would like to get back into posting properly if anyone is still interested.

Thanks.

Your character is about to start some new project, a new beginning--a big move, a new job, a new relationship. Is there anything they'd like to clear up from their "old life?" Mistakes they'd like to fix, misunderstandings to settle, bad habits they'd like to kick, good habits they'd like to start? What do they do?

The rain and Fall weather has arrived here. I hope the weather's being gentle on everyone as there's a lot of it out there.

Barry gets sick, even his metahuman metabolism doesn't help him.

Sunshine goes forward. I hope it all turns out in a positive way.

Bonnie cleans up after the mess of the glittersnot plot.

What have you been finishing and enjoying reading?
