Just finished reading Beautriful Cratures and Beautiful Darkness.

I must say that I liked the second book better, but the over all writing in both is good. If you've ever visited The South in the United States, you know that it is a culture unto itself. This book does a good job making you feel like you're there and explaining the mindset--even if it's in an exaggerated way. To be fair, the story is told through the eyes of a young teenage boy, so exaggerations are a given.

I found both of them very readable and the characters likable (or hate-able, as intended), if a bit emo (again, they are teens, so...). The imagery was solid and at times mysterious. There were themes borrowed from other literary sources, but credit was always given--it was obvious that they were giving a nod to To Kill a Mockingbird and various other works of literature and poetry that most people who like to read will have at least been peripherally introduced to. I liked that they incorporated it in such a way that it would make readers want to look into more classic literature and poetry while reading a modern novel...not enough YA books do that.

I'll warn you (I don't think this is spoilery) that the second book is a tiny cliff-hanger that makes it very obvious a third installment is in the works.

Now that I've read these, I guess I'll have to check my wishlist and find something else to keep me company at bedtime! If I must, I must!
