People! When a crossing guard (read: ME) is standing in the road, holding up a large, red, octagonal, metal sign that reads, "STOP" on it, it should be pretty clear that you should STOP.
Not creep up as close as you can get to my legs without hitting me, not pull halfway into the clearly defined and painted crosswalk I'm standing in and DEFINITELY not honk at me. I am there for a reason--to conduct children safely across the street so they don't get mowed down by the likes of you.
Also? It is NOT okay to go once the kids are out of the road, if I am STILL THERE HOLDING THE SIGN UP. When I am out of the road, too, and my sign in DOWN, then you can go. Is it really that hard? I do my best to be quick about it and inconvenience you as little as possible.
If you honk at me in an attempt to speed me up, or just to be funny and try to scare me, the BEST result you can hope for is that I will turn to face you, keeping my sign in the air, and wait there expectantly to find out why you are trying to get my attention. At worst, you might startle me enough to "accidentally" drop my heavy metal sign on the hood of your shiny car.
And DON'T try to do my job for me by motioning for the kids to go, or waiting in place until I get tired of wondering why you're just sitting there like a dumbass and put up my sign. You may think you're being nice and 'letting' us go while you use your car to hold up everyone, but I deliberately hold kids at the corner to let some kids catch up, or to wait for a break in traffic. If I need you to stop, I will lift my sign and step into the road...otherwise, I will assume that you will obey normal traffic laws.
K? THXBAI!
