Reviews have been a bit slow for the past couple of days, mostly, I think, because FA has been slow in getting Chapter four posted. I did have one beautiful reader review four of my fics, though, so I can’t complain!
darke_mage - Wow! You really went on a reading spree!
(
All That You Require) – Wow! I can’t ask for any higher praise than that! I love Harry/Ginny, so I’m glad that I could help someone see that it’s not all bad! Thanks for reading and reviewing!!
(
The More Things Change) – Thank you! This was the very fist HP fan fic I ever wrote! I might tackle Dudley’s POV someday, or go back and rework the existing fic to include it.
(
The Enemy of my Enemy) – Thank you! I don’t really think that Draco is going to be redeemed in Canon, but it was fun to write. I hope that Harry and Snape will at least find a mutual non-hatred for each other in the books!
(
Neville’s New Wand) – I hope that Neville has a break through similar to this in canon – he so deserves it!
Below is a survey that has been making the rounds, and I blatantly stole it from another LJ! It was kind of fun to fill out the answers and consider some of the questions. If anyone’s interested, this is a bit about me:
How old are you? Thirty-three (but I don’t feel that old!) How old were you when you first started reading/writing fanfiction in general? Writing, twelve. Reading, well, twelve, but it was just me and my little fan-girl friends exchanging stories at that point – that was before the internet (gasp!). Do you ever feel your interpretation of the books has been affected by fandom? A bit. It’s hard not to get confused between fanon and canon sometimes. There are also some very keen observations that I feel I never would have made on my own. Do you openly share your participation in fandom, or only with certain people? Or do you keep it a secret entirely, except for people you see online? I really only share it with my online friends. If someone asks me what I’m always writing about in my mysterious notebooks and scraps of paper, I usually just tell them that I enjoy creative writing. I mean, I don’t really need to ADVERTISE that I’m a total geek. If someone asked me what I write about, I’d tell them.
Did you ever write/read fanfic for any fandoms before Harry Potter? Yes. Mostly it was X-men (the comics, not the movies or cartoons) I think that there’s still an ancient story of mine floating around out there in an archive. It was the only one I ever ‘published’ online. It was about Cyclops, and it was called Rose Colored Glasses. In retrospect - it really sucked! Lol! What other fandoms do you write/ read fics for, if any? None. Just Harry Potter. I have been tempted by a couple of others, but haven’t taken the leap yet. Have you ever written a crossover? Nope! I’ve never really read any that I fell in love with enough to attempt it myself. The only one I can remember liking was a LOTR crossover with HP – I can’t remember the name of it, but the author treated the LOTR like a pre-history to the HPverse. It was well done. What about an Alternative Universe? I haven’t written them, unless you consider future fics AU. I do enjoy reading them, especially the “Stealing Harry” universe (it’s what got me over my squick with slash). http://oojahs.snoo.org/stealingharry/stealingharry.htm
The Sword of the Hero by Joe6991 http://groups.yahoo.com/group/hero_trilogy/
Is really good, and it’s sequel is an awesome AUWere either/both challenging, or did you find either/both easy? Easy to read! What do you think of original characters? I obviously support them! LOL! I think it all depends on the person writing them. I first used them in my fic “No Laughing Matter”, and I’m afraid that Carly, my first OC is a bit of a Mary Sue… but at least I tried, and people enjoyed the story. Have you ever read an exceptionally good original character? Oh yes. They are not always easy to pull off, but there are a few I really like. There are several in the Sword of the Hero that I love, and there’s a fic called “The Greatest Kind of Magic” by Private Maladict http://www.schnoogle.com/authorLinks/Private_Maladict/ that has a fabulous OC as the main character. In your opinion, what is the difference between a good original character and a "Mary Sue"? That’s a good question – I think a Mary Sue is someone who’s just not believable as a Character, because they’re just too good to be true. For example, an American transfer student comes to Hogwarts and immediately makes the famous trio a quartet. She ensnares Harry’s heart, rivals Hermione’s brain, and always has your back in a fight. She will be critical to bringing down the Dark Lord, and have awesome magical powers! Okay – maybe that’s a bit extreme, but you get the idea. Has any fanfiction you've ever read personally affected you? To an extent. I think that some of them had given me pause, and maybe challenged my way of thinking on certain subject. There are only one or two that have had a profound emotional impact on me (made me teary-eyed) One was “The Park Bench” by Plumeria (sorry no link), which was slash, but beautifully done. And the other that comes immediately to mind is “Sleep Well” by TeaWithVoldy. Have you ever written a fanfic based on a real event you or someone else experienced? Of course! I think that most writers draw from personal knowledge and experiences. Stories seem more real to the reader if they are about something the writer is intimately familiar with. Have you ever written an original story based on a fanfic idea? No, not really. Any original stuff has been, well, original. How about the reverse? I don’t see the point in it. If it’s been done, it’s been done! What do you think of the movies? I enjoyed them. I think that they should be taken as they are intended. As light entertainment. It’s fun to get excited about them and support them and all, but they’re never going to be as good as the books (what movie based on a book is?) Do you think that the movies and marketing are a good thing, or do you think they take away from the books? I think that they should be thought of a two entirely different animals, or you’re bound to be disappointed. Finally, back to fandom. What are some advantages and disadvantages of fansites and fanfiction? I think that fansites are an expression of an individual’s desire to share what they love with others – that’s a good thing! Do you think it has taught you anything? Fandom? Absolutely! There are a lot of people out there that share the same love, and each one has his or her own opinion about it. I love hearing what other people think and sharing my own thoughts. I learn something new every day.
Finally - have you changed since you first started writing fanfic? Well duh – I’m older and, hopefully, wiser. My writing style has improved vastly since my teens. My interests have changed and I’ve gained life experiences that were outside my scope of imagination then. Writing fan fic is one of my hobbies, and I use it to stretch my imagination, and to hopefully spark that same thing in others. Goofy link: Ding! Fries are Done! (You need sound for this)
